[원문]:The biggest firestorm by far was generated by the teacher-testing program. The Arkansas Education Association (AEA) went ballistic, accusing me of degrading teachers and using them as scapegoats. For the first time in my life, I was charged with racism, on the assumption that a higher percentage of black teachers would fail the test. Cynics accused Hillary and me of grandstanding to increase our popularity among people who would otherwise oppose any tax increase. (My Life, Bill Clinton)
[on the assumption that]:1)역자는 “내가 많은 흑인 교사들이 탈락할 것으로 가정하고 있다” 운운하고 있는데요. 2)그것은 원저의 저자 빌 클린턴, 즉 I를 비난하는 유권자들의 “가정”이죠. 3)on the assumption 대신에 based on the assumption이라고 할 수도 있지만 의미는 같아요. (=based on the foundation)
[comments]::1)Why jump to your conjecture prematurely? Why don't you use your brain? Why prejudge the conclusion only with a glimpse of the beginning?
2)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that they (the two co-translators) have misconstrued the statement in question {{I was charged with racism, on the assumption that a higher percentage of black teachers would fail the test.}}to mean to the effect that "they charged me with racism because they thought I was biased against black teachers who I assumed a higher percentage of black teachers would fail the test."
3)That's not it. You've got to find out the semantic subject of the nominal phrase "the assumption." Which pronoun do you think is the subject of the noun phrase "the assumption?" The pronoun they is the answer, so the statement in question can be restated (or paraphrased) as: I was charged with racism because they assumed that a higher percentage of black teachers would fail the test.
4)If the Korean version were to be correct, the original version should have been as one of the two following statements. One: I became the butt of racism charge because they thought I was biased against black teachers a higher percentage of whom I thought would fail the test. Two: They accused me of my being a racist because they thought I was biased against black teachers a higher percentage of whom I presumed would fail the test.
