[cause. convert]:1)'대의명분‘ ’개종‘이라고 옮기고 있는데요. 왜 그러는지 알 수가 없군요. 2)내가 왜 이런 말을 하는지 모르시겠어요? 사전에 있는 단어의 풀이를, 그것도 상위에 있는 정의를 “대입하는” 그런 번역은 이른바 ’고딩‘이라도 할 수가 있죠. 당신이 고딩과 다르다면, 더 나가서 “나 일류 번역가야”라고 생각한다면 이런 번역은 해서는 안되죠.


[사전은 그저 눈흘김에 그쳐야]:1)사전은 그저 눈 흘김에 그쳐야 해요. 다른 말로 하면, 사전이란 그저 한번 힐끗 보는 것으로 그쳐야한다고요.2)왜냐하면 그 어떤 단어의 특정 표현 속의 의미는 “상호 관계 속에서 규정되기 때문”이지요.


[another convert to the cause]:1)"대의명분에 따라 개종“ 운운 말이 안 되죠. 2)이 번역이 전혀 틀린 번역이라는 것은 ‘개종’의 의미 때문이지요. 개종이란 기독교에서 카톨릭으로 신앙의 대상을 변경하는 행위를 의미하죠. 2)another convert에서 another가 번역되지 않은 것만 봐도 역자는 이 표현의 의미를 전혀 오해하고 있음이 분명합니다. 3)여기서 the cause는 작중의 인물들이 누누이 언급하고 있는 정신분석 (psychoanalysis)를 말하죠. 따라서, 이 구절의 바른 번역은 ”또 다른 한 사람의 정신분석 옹호자“ 정도의 의미가 되는 것이죠.

[comments]::1)A cook book is to a chef is what a dictionary is to a translator. An English dictionary is not anything but a frame of reference and should be one, of course. A mere pick of a particular definition on the top list of a dictionary and its subsequent rendition into another language is just a piece of cake, which is likely to plunge into the pit of errors.


2)A basic point and major problem is that Korean translators are ignorant about the fundamentals of the English language, that is, they have no idea about the structure of the language. What do I mean by the structure anyway? I mean the structure by the knowledge that English, like all the other languages of the civilized nations, is the language of relationships.


3)Figuratively speaking, you are nothing, I am nothing, and everybody on earth is nothing by himself or herself alone. There is no independent human existence and if anything, there is no meaning to it. One's existence is defined by and put a value on it by one's relationships to each other or to one another.


4)There is something wanting in Korean translators. All the misunderstandings, or all the mistranslations of and by the Korean translators are caused by this small amount of deficiency, say, the deficiency of two percent: They are dictionary-bound, hands and feet and in thoughts.


5)The phrases 'another convert' and 'the cause' have real lives in a particular sentence of a paragraph of the novel entitled The Interpretation of Murder. A convert does not mean "a person who changes his or her religions" in the novel, of which the meaning is newly defined in the statements of the paragraph.


6)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he or she has misconstrued the phrase at issue {{...and another convert to the cause, thanks to me}}to mean to the effect that "he has changed his religion for the cause because of me." Nothing like that. 'Another convert' in this case means "another new proponent of the theory‘ and "to the cause" in this case means "to the cause of Freud's psychoanalysis." In brief, the phrase at issue should have been paraphrased:"Publisher Jelliffe has become a new proponent of Freud's psychoanalysis theory, thanks to my efforts."
