Recklessness Is Worse Than Ignorance!

[어휘.언어감각]:1)어휘가 문제됩니다. firearm 정도의 단어는 시사 뉴스 등과 관련하여 자주 나오는 단어이고, 그 어떤 기준으로도 고등학교 1학년 정도에서 이미 알고 있어야 할 단어이기도 합니다. (제2외국어권의 경우) 물론 영어권 시민이라면 이미 초등학교에서 알고 있는 단어입니다. 더구나 미국의 경우라면 거의 매일 듣는 단어이고 보는 이미지가 아닐까 합니다. 2)설사 그 단어를 몰랐다고 하드래도, 아니 firearm을 [The Google Story]의 번역자의 경우처럼 ‘소방기구’로 잘못 알고 있었다고 하드래도 “소방기구 광고가 왜 문제되지?”라는 데 생각이 미쳐야 하고 당연히 사전을 한번 찾아보는 것 만으로도 이 실수를 막을 수 있었을 것입니다. 그런데도 역자는 그것조차 하지 않았습니다.


[소방기구]:1)참고로 소방기구는 영어로 fire-fighting equipment라고 합니다. 2)firearms를 구글 검색창에 쓰고 그 이미지를 클릭해 보세요. 각종 총기류들 (pistols, shotguns, machine guns)이 전시됩니다.


[정역]:...전략...중략...또한 이 회사는 의약품, 금융 서비스, 주류나 총기류 광고를 게재해 법적 책임을 지게 될 상당한 위험에 직면했다.

[comments]::1)I have no words for the translator who has made this kind of a mistake. If I were to have any words for him, I would be tempted to ask of him, whispering to his brazen ears, whether he would like to return to that cozy cocoon. Don't you miss the silent peace not bothered by any outside interruptions or interferences?


2)The sense and sensibility of a so-called translator will have to be at issue. We can take issue with his or her poor vocabulary. But what has to be truly criticized, I think, is his or her recklessness which cannot help but result in the ludicrous mistake. A translator's sense I mean here by his or her immediate suspicion of mistaken perception of the word firearms for fire-fighting equipment. Finally, a translator's sensibility I mean by his or her efforts to look up the word in the dictionary.


3)Is there any reason that a company which runs ads for fire-fighting equipment will have to take legal liabilities? Use your common sense as a global citizen. The translator has got the original text messages utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the word firearms to mean in effect fire-fighting equipment. Let me be brief by saying a few words: Recklessness is worse than ignorance.
